CHAPTER SEVEN

DOMINIC BROODED ABOUT it all the way home. It was a dilemma he couldn’t really discuss with anyone.

Where did you take your fiancée-who-wasn’t-really on a date-that-wasn’t-really, on the grounds of getting to know each other better so they could look relaxed when they stood next to each other at their wedding, instead of as if they were scared the other might accidentally scald them? Especially when you discovered that actually, you were really attracted to your fake bride-to-be and you thought she might feel the same about you?

This was bizarre. He’d never been in a position before where he didn’t have a clue where to take his date. But Catriona was so guarded and self-contained that he couldn’t work out what sort of thing she might like.

Checking the internet didn’t help. The ‘first date’ ideas in winter were all just too samey. Going to glitzy, Instagrammable bars; wrapping up warm for a walk in the park and then having hot chocolate together; a winter brunch.

What he needed was something that would make them have to get close and physical.

Dancing? Except Catriona preferred classical music, which pretty much ruled out a nightclub.

He couldn’t imagine her ice-skating at any of the seasonal pop-up rinks, either.

She’d grown up in a castle and she read historical novels. Maybe he could take her to a museum? Except their visit would need to be outside office hours, which in most cases would mean a weekend. He was pretty sure she’d like something like the Queen’s House at Greenwich, with its amazing staircase, or maybe something more unusual, like the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology.

Maybe he should just ask her what she’d like to do.

Considering their office was open plan and she was only a few feet away...everyone would hear their conversation. So he’d do it a more subtle way.

Assuming that, like him, she turned her phone to silent when she was at work, he texted her.

Yo, Fifi. You busy at the weekend?

Why? was the answer.

Typical Catriona, giving nothing away.

Wondered if you wanted to go to the Queen’s House in Greenwich. Or a museum. Would suggest this evening but can’t find any open late. Maybe British Museum on Friday’s late opening?

Either would be nice.

Cinema tonight? Maybe we could go to one of the live theatre screenings, if there’s one on.

Sounds good. Let me know what time.

He checked the listings, found one at a cinema the other side of Regent’s Park from her flat, and booked their tickets, then texted her the details.

Film starts at seven.

Thank you, Fergus.

That cheekiness in her reply made him smile. Then:

This is the cinema chain that delivers food and drink to your seat, yes? If so, I’ll buy drinks and food.

Perfect. Meet you outside Baker Street tube station after work?

It was only a couple of stops on the Circle line from St Pancras to Baker Street; he left the office first, and waited for her outside the tube station entrance. She’d clearly caught the train after his, because she was only five minutes behind him.
